Beyond Fluency is a speech pathology practice that services individuals of all ages who stutter. We offer specialized assessment and treatment plans in the Asheville and surrounding areas. Teletherapy or video conferencing is available as well. Our therapist is licensed to practice in North Carolina and New York.

Our Mission

Regardless of the client's age, our mission is to help people who stutter say what they want to say—whenever, however, and to whomever they wish. In other words: "Free your voice. Speak your mind."

How is this accomplished? Stuttering is a complex disorder that could affect many facets of a person’s life, beyond just speech (e.g., blocking, repeating, or prolonging sounds). For some, this might mean that stuttering affects their confidence and feelings of self-worth. For others, this might mean that stuttering affects their social, academic, or work life. We understand that stuttering affects people differently, and could even be variable within a person (with some days being more challenging than others). We develop uniquely tailored treatment plans to address the needs of each individual. Doing so allows clients to achieve effective communication, with the guidance of a stuttering therapist.

Our therapy addresses the "whole" person, not just speech fluency. This entails:

• Providing clients with information about stuttering;

• Helping clients better understand how speech is produced;

• Building clients' confidence as communicators; 

• Reducing clients' physical tension when speaking; and

• Facilitating clients' paths to becoming effective communicators.

These goals apply to children as well. Parental/caregiver involvement is key to helping children develop healthy attitudes about themselves and their speech abilities.
